Where Do You Want to Be?

If you are considering the option of bankruptcy, I know what you’re thinking: “Do I really need to find a bankruptcy lawyer?” It is a common question for people at the edge of bankruptcy, and here is the answer I always give: where do you want to be in twelve months? How about four years?

Ideally, you want to put this bankruptcy behind you. That means in twelve months your case is over and you know what the terms are going forward. And those terms should be good enough that you still have a home, a reputation and a basis for your livelihood. In four years, you should be more than back on your feet, you should be moved on and have put this in your past. Your bankruptcy should be a distant memory you can think of as a learning experience.

However many people have the opposite experience. If they go through the bankruptcy process recklessly or without proper guidance, it can drag on a long time. Even when it is finally over it might leave very long-lasting scars. For example if you lose your home and now have a bankruptcy on your credit record, where do you go to live? If you lose your cars, how do you look for a job or go to the job you have? If you cannot live in the same area or go to work, how do you keep up your reputation in your field and among friends? Even with the debts excused, you might find you can’t get back on your feet for years.

That is why it’s so important to find a bankruptcy lawyer. A lawyer will help you identify the most intelligent options for your bankruptcy process and will coach you through every step of the way. They will help you keep the things you need and come out feeling like you have options for how to go forward. A lawyer is one of the best choices you can make.
