How Not to Get Beads

If it’s Mardi Gras, you want to get Mardi Gras beads, simple as that. Earning them can be a lot of fun, however, there are some do’s and don’ts that go with it. In general, there are lots and lots of ways to earn beads and still keep your clothes on. Blow a kiss, flex your muscles, do some cheesy dance moves. It’s hard to go wrong – but not impossible. Avoid the following moves when looking for beads on the big day.

1. Standing there waiting for beads. Just because beads are flying through the air like reindeer on Christmas does not mean they are free. I’ve seen many people stand on the street under a balcony and just stare up waiting to be given beads. Sometimes the person will wave like that is all they have to do. Beads are earned, not just given away. This may get you a few pity beads but it will not endear you to the people up above.

2. Bead Blocking. This is my term for a specific kind of person who will jump in front of someone else and snatch the beads they are about to catch. That kind of move is great in b-ball, not so great on Bourbon Street. I have seen fistfights break out over less. Don’t do it.

3. The Tease Flash. Ladies, if you don’t want to take off your top on Mardi Gras that is just fine. But if you stand around with your hands on your shirt like you’re about to, and then don’t – you’re more likely to get booed than beaded!

Avoid these three faux pas and you will do just fine!
